Mathilda, my faithful steed.
CIMG0681
A Frenchman told me there's not much to see in Brittany. He was right.
CIMG0684
CIMG0685
CIMG0686
CIMG0687
This is about the point I met another English cyclist, who suggested we follow the canal to Rennes.
CIMG0689
This...
...and this was (part of) the aftermath. We sold out and got a cheap hotel room, which I imagine they're still cleaning the mud out of.

CIMG0693
CIMG0694
CIMG0696
CIMG0699
CIMG0701
CIMG0702
CIMG0704
There was a time early on when I would have called this a steep hill.
CIMG0706
Not even a kettle in the room: roughing it.
CIMG0709
Buffet starter: I don't know what all of this was, but it was pretty damn spectacular. This was followed by a steak which I devoured too quickly to take a photo of.
CIMG0711
CIMG0713
CIMG0714
Some sort of DIY river crossing contraption, where you pull youself across on a chain. British health and safety would be all over this here.
CIMG0718

CIMG0721
CIMG0722
CIMG0723
CIMG0724
CIMG0725
CIMG0726
CIMG0727
Plevy, I got a bit of surveying done out here: 200m york stone.
CIMG0730
My tent/home/sarcophagus.
CIMG0734
CIMG0735
CIMG0736
CIMG0737
CIMG0738
This was around about the point where my knee decided to give up.

My preparations for what I expected to be the worst day's navigating.
CIMG0766
CIMG0767
CIMG0768
CIMG0769
CIMG0770
This seemed like a brilliant idea, until I woke up with semi-permanently transferred green marker all over my face.
CIMG0776
CIMG0777
CIMG0778
CIMG0779
ROFL.
I was starting to realise that my earlier encounters with 'hills' were a bit tame.
Fun fact #1: This is pretty much how I felt at the time.
CIMG0786
It became clear that a destination on a green or blue sign meant 'the direct and easy way that is not accessible to cyclists', whereas 'par route touristique' meant 'fuck you cyclists, this goes straight over every hill on purpose.'
CIMG0788
Left turn? Nope.
CIMG0791
CIMG0792
CIMG0793
CIMG0794
CIMG0796
CIMG0797
CIMG0798
CIMG0799
Now THESE are steep.
CIMG0801
Fun fact #2: This is about the point where I collapsed off of my bike and had to lie at the side of the road for half an hour to regain my composure.
Worth it for the downhill afterwards though.
CIMG0804
CIMG0805
Nath, whatever 'services' you may offer, they're clearly renowned enough to be signposted from the east of France.

"I'm sorry sir, but the rooms don't have toilets in..."
Frankly I don't know what you're supposed to be then, but tonight you're a toilet.
CIMG0856
This is what essentially fuelled the whole trip.
CIMG0861
The star of the show, parked up for the last time.
Now I'd seen some pretty brilliant things on this trip, but this is an absolutely triumph of Swiss ingenuity - Ovaltine chocolate spread. Spread on crispy French tartines, it tastes like melted Maltesers on toast, and is absolutely bloody phenomenal.

A photo gallery of not much more than fields, rivers and lakes of France and Switzerland.
