Welcome to Cochin, India. We arrived with a warm and welcome greeting!
Our guides took us on a wonderful excusion through this great city in the South of India.
All the trucks you see here are decorated. It's a standard practice!
Don't expect to see air conditioning here!
This part of India has a lot of Christians. Here is a very old church. It's actually made of mud, and has been standing for hundreds of years. Imagine that.
You see these "auto rickshaws" everywhere. And, I mean EVERYWHERE.
Let's see what's here at this open air market
The Outdoor Market
Don't have a stall? No problem. Just plunk yourself down on the sidewalk and take out your goods. Sooner or later, you will sell some.

How would you like your cow cut up? This man will do it. Beef is readily available in this part of India, unlike other parts where beef is not eaten.
I wonder if he knows what a New York Cut is?
Ralph compares notes with other people from the ship, who we bumped into.

I think they must get great gas mileage.
We had a great car with great air conditioning. Thank god for that!
Give this guy a buck, hand him a bag of laundry, and come back at 5pm. You will have the most-amazing hand laundry, ready to be worn.
A simple, yet effective laundry facility. Everything is done by hand.
Who's next?
Ralph is wondering if he should drop off his Prada clothing for a quick wash.
So, here is how it works. This guy takes your clothes, soaks them, rings then, and then slaps them against a washing stone. Then, he rings them out again, and like magic, they are clean.
After a good washing, your clothing is hung to dry. It only takes 30 minutes.
After drying, this guy takes the laundry down, folds it, then brings it to you house. Better lock the doors.
I am glad we had a private car!
Here's a couple in love, just out for a Saturday drive
I was waiting for her to jump on the bike. Alas, I think the bike belonged to someone else.
Ready To See Some Fishing Action?
Cochin is know around the world for this unique fishing method, whereby they drop nets on huge teak hinges into the water, let the fish swim in, and then lift the nets out...then looking for the booty.
Even the locals gather for a peek
Caution! Goat Crossing Ahead!

We were treated to a local festival. The parade route was marked by the orange and white banners you see here.

So, here is something that you really need to see. These guys pierce their cheeks, and pass a 10-foot long rod through it. It's a pendance, of sorts, done for this religious festival.

We purchased this amazing elephant. It is an antique, carved out of a single piece of rosewood, and painted with 9 carat gold dust. It came from a family collection, but is now headed to Miami!
We capped off our day with a five star lunch at the Taj Malabar Hote.
