[EN] Florida was discovered by the Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León, who spotted the peninsula on April 2, 1513 and named it La Florida. The French Huguenot (Protestant) explorer Jean Ribault discovered the St. Johns River area in 1562 and proposed it to be a crown colony for the Huguenots. In 1564, René Goulaine de Laudonnière established a colony with 200 settlers and with the help of Timucuan Indians built a fort named La Caroline after French King Charles IX. In 1565, Spanish King Philip II ordered Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés to dislodge the French. Spanish troops landed in the present area of St. Augustine and marched north to Fort Caroline. The Spanish troops massacred 140 settlers sparing only 60 women and children. In 1568, French troops under Dominique de Gourgues attacked the fort and killed all Spanish troops. Afterwards, the fort was abandoned.
