Day 13 was cloudy and intermittently misty. We stayed in Galway City, walking the promenade on the Bay and wandering around the charming, flower-bedecked buildings in the historical section. Most impressive of all we saw was St. Nicholas Church, where Christopher Columbus once worshipped. It is a huge stone structure begun in 1320 and after being enlarged, partially destroyed by Cromwell’s forces in 1652. Later restored, it is still in use as a collegiate church today. We also saw the Spanish arches, built in the 16th century as part of the docks in Galway Bay. We dined at the King’s Head Pub. In 1649 it was owned by the man who beheaded Charles I.
