[EN] Crazy Horse Memorial was proposed by a Lakota elder Standing Bear in 1929. He asked the Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who used to work on Mt. Rushmore project in 1924, to design and to execute the Memorial. The construction started officially in 1948. As Korczak Ziolkowski refused federal and state funding, a non-profit foundation finances this project. Korczak Ziolkowski died in 1982 - his wife Ruth and seven of their 10 children continue the work on the Monument.
[PL] Pomnik Wodza Szalony Koń został zaproponowany przez Stojącego Niedźwiedzia (Standing Bear) wodza Indian Lakota. Napisał on w roku 1929 do Korczaka Ziółkowskiego, amerykańskiego rzeźbiarza polskiego pochodzenia z prośbą o zaprojektowanie i wykonanie tego pomnika. Korczak Ziółkowski znany był z pracy z Gutzonem Borglumem nad projektem pomnika Mt. Rushmore.
[EN] Jewel Cave is the third longest cave in the world after Mammoth Cave in Kentucky and Sistema Sac Actun Cave in Mexico. The mapped length is 166.3 miles (267.6 km). Calcite crystal resembling jewels line the cave. We signed for the Scenic Tour. It last 1 hour 20 minutes and involves walking up and down 723 stair steps on a 1/2 mile (0.8 km) loop. As we had about 2 hours free time before the tour, we went for lunch to Custer.
